Domains

  • Country, where the business will operate, so ‘. co.uk’ for the UK, ‘.com’ to the US or ‘.fr’ for France.
  • Form of organisation i.e ’.org’ for international bodies, ‘.club’ for companies who demonstrate a passion for something, ‘pro’ for companies who want to say that they are professional.
  • Owners name in a domain, i.e. www.caxtons.xxx or www.maxfactor.xxx
  • Abstract name, i.e. www.ohlalala.xxx
  • Company name or its abbreviation, i.e. www. () or www.lmc.xxx (the laryngeal mask company)
  • Name of the product or service, i.e. www.legalaid.xxx (Legal aid),
  • Name of the place, i.e. www.jersey.xxx
  • Name of the activity or group the website will be devoted to, i.e. www.parentstoddlersgroup.xxxx or www.cycelingforhealth.xxx
  • The Name must be easy to remember - the shorter you can keep your domain name, the better. For instance, the domain name of one or two words that quickly identifies website’s goals, easy to remember, would look good on a mug, and even shows that your organization is a community.
  • The Name has to fit the brand - chosing the Name that fits your business is a little more difficult. The domain name has to relate to the business and hints at the products or services offered.
  • The Name has to stand out - If the business is different from its competitors, it can be used to highlight that difference. If the business markets to more high-end customers, a words like “Velvet” and “Luxury” is going to appeal more than ‘Black’ or ‘Cup’.

What to do if your domain is already taken?

Sometimes the ideal domain may already be taken, but that doesn’t mean lack of options. The name might be a tweaked to reflect popular spelling that comes up often in searches. One can try combination of words or just to check if the ideal name is purchased by someone who is willing to sell it. Another solution is to choose another extension that the one you wanted.
